A new film, 'The Social Reckoning', which serves as a stand-alone sequel to 2010's 'The Social Network', is scheduled for release in UK cinemas on October 9. Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the original film, takes on directing duties for this new production.
The film is inspired by the events that led to the 2021 Facebook Files reports by Wall Street Journal writer Jeff Horwitz. Jeremy Strong takes over the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, previously played by Jesse Eisenberg. Mikey Madison stars as Frances Haugen, a Facebook employee who uncovers a link between social media algorithms and the rise of right-wing groups, bringing her findings to journalist Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White.
'The Social Reckoning' explores Zuckerberg facing a US government investigation as his platform is depicted as contributing to the January 6, 2021 Washington insurrection. The film is split into two parallel narratives: Haugen's whistleblowing and Zuckerberg's preparations for a deposition.
