Tom Banton has revealed that a conversation with head coach Brendon McCullum helped relaunch his England career. Banton, who had been absent from international cricket for three and a half years, made his comeback in a T20 match against the West Indies last June, where he scored three runs.
Following that game, McCullum reportedly advised Banton not to worry and to continue playing his natural game. Since then, Banton has made 28 consecutive appearances for England. On Thursday, he scored 52 not out from 24 deliveries in England's series-clinching victory over Sri Lanka.
The 27-year-old batter now appears settled as England's number four. England's 20-over team is currently second in the world rankings, having won 15 of their 17 completed games this year, and is close to overtaking India for the top spot. Banton also praised the team's camaraderie under Harry Brook's captaincy.
England aims to complete a 3-0 series sweep against Sri Lanka on Saturday at Emirates Old Trafford. New Test coach Stephen Fleming is expected to attend to meet the squad and discuss his job share with McCullum.
