Tony Appleton, famous town crier, retires at 90

Tony Appleton, known for announcing royal births, has retired as a town crier at the age of 90, citing the weight of his uniform.

Tony Appleton, a prominent town crier, has announced his retirement at 90 years old. Mr Appleton, from Chelmsford, gained international recognition in July 2013 when he announced the birth of Prince George outside St Mary's Hospital in London, a tradition he continued for George's siblings.

Mr Appleton stated that his uniform had become too heavy to wear for several hours. He told BBC Essex presenter Ben Fryer in his final cry: "Oyez, oyez, oyez. Tony Appleton, the town crier, has called it a day! God save the King!"

Before becoming a town crier, Mr Appleton worked as a toastmaster, hosting various events. He purchased the title of Lord of the Manor in Great Baddow in 1992.
