Tony Romo will not return as an NFL analyst for CBS Sports, the network announced on Friday. This decision follows his July arrest for operating a vehicle while under the influence.
CBS Sports stated that they and Romo have "mutually agreed to part ways," thanking him for his contributions over the past nine years. Romo, a former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, had been on indefinite leave since his arrest during a traffic stop on 23 July in Wisconsin.
Romo pleaded no contest to the charge on 1 September, resulting in a six-month driving ban, an order for an interlock device on his vehicle, an $834 fine, and completion of an alcohol assessment program. He stated he will take time to consider his next steps, focusing on his health and family.
JJ Watt, who filled in when Romo was placed on leave, will continue to serve as CBS's lead NFL game analyst alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson. Romo, 46, had been CBS's lead NFL analyst since 2017 and signed a 10-year, $180m contract in 2020.
