An adventurous tortoise named Arnie has been reunited with her owner after being unknowingly taken to a household waste and recycling centre in Cornwall.

  • Arnie the tortoise climbed into a garden waste bag and was taken to St Erth Household Waste and Recycling Centre.
  • Staff at the centre rescued Arnie from a green waste bin before compaction.
  • The tortoise was reunited with her owner, Jacqueline Sear, within four hours thanks to the facility's booking system.

A tortoise named Arnie has been safely returned to her owner, Jacqueline Sear, after an unexpected trip to a recycling and garden waste centre in Cornwall. Arnie reportedly ventured into a garden waste bag at Ms Sear's home before it was taken to the St Erth Household Waste and Recycling Centre on Tuesday.

Suez, which operates the facility, contacted customers who had visited the centre that day via email. Stuart Parker, Suez senior site manager, stated that finding Arnie's owner was "quite simple" due to the booking system, and the tortoise was reunited with Ms Sear within four hours.

Staff at the centre discovered Arnie during regular checks of the bins. Mr Parker said they took "delicate action" to remove the tortoise from the green waste bin and away from any dangers. Ms Sear confirmed Arnie was "absolutely fine" after the adventure, noting the skip had enough garden refuse for her to eat.

What this means for you: People clearing their gardens are urged to be aware that wildlife, such as hedgehogs, could be hiding within garden waste.
