Two 25-year-old men have died after collapsing during the Great North Run on Sunday, the event's organiser, the Great Run Company, has stated.

Both participants fell ill on the half marathon route, which runs from Newcastle to South Shields. The Great Run Company confirmed that both men were from the north-east of England and passed away despite the efforts of the event's medical team.

A spokesperson for the company said that the causes of death will be determined in due course. They added that support is being provided to the families of the men.

The event, now in its 45th year, saw 63,000 runners take part.
