Tropical Storm Dujuan, currently skirting the coast of Japan, is expected to restrengthen into a typhoon by Tuesday morning. Sustained winds could reach 80mph, with gusts approaching 100mph.
While mainland Japan has avoided a direct hit, Dujuan's track is set to cross the Izu Islands, where evacuation warnings have been issued. Residents face widespread alerts for heavy rain, flooding, and landslides, alongside threats from high waves in exposed coastal areas.
Exceptional rainfall totals are anticipated, with approximately 200mm possible along the southern coasts of the Chubu and Kanto regions within 24 hours. The Tokyo metropolitan area could see nearly 90mm of rain in six hours on Monday evening, while the Izu peninsula might receive over 80mm in just three hours.
Dujuan is forecast to continue its north-eastward trajectory before dissipating in the north-west Pacific later this week.
