Birdwatching in the UK has seen a notable increase in participation, with the RSPB reporting a 47% rise in regular birdwatchers across Britain over the past eight years. This growth includes a tenfold increase in engagement from individuals aged 16 to 29.
Jamie Wyver, editor of the RSPB Magazine, suggests that starting the hobby is straightforward, noting that binoculars are helpful but not essential for beginners. He highlights the utility of birding apps, stating that identifying birds by sight or sound using a phone makes the activity more accessible.
The UK ranks as the second-largest global user of Merlin, an app capable of identifying over 1,000 bird species by their calls. Rachael and Dan Brown, who run the wildlife watching tour company Wild Discovery, also observe a growing social acceptance for bird and wildlife appreciation.
Recommended locations for beginner birdwatching holidays include Mull and Shetland in Scotland, Bempton Cliffs in Yorkshire, and the Isles of Scilly. The Somerset Levels are also noted as a significant bird habitat.
