A new civil resistance group has emerged in the UK, calling on individuals to engage in 'mass shoplifting' as a form of protest against food poverty and inequality. Eve Middleton, one of the activists involved, described being surrounded by police in a park while distributing vegan biscuits with fellow protesters. She claimed that approximately 30 officers were present and that they were told not to run or face cuffs.
Despite the confrontations, the group maintains that their actions are aimed at drawing attention to food inequality and poverty in the UK. They argue that many people struggle to access affordable, nutritious food, particularly those on low incomes.
The government has implemented various support schemes to address food poverty, including a £30 million package announced in 2022 to help vulnerable households with food costs. However, critics contend that these measures are insufficient and do not address the root causes of the issue.
