UK military bases on high alert amid increased security concerns

UK military bases are on high alert following recent security incidents and alleged plots, prompting a debate about national security.

  • An alleged terrorist plot to attack RAF Fairford, with strong indications of Iranian involvement, led to US bombers being recalled.
  • Two Latvians were arrested on Thursday on suspicion of trespass at RAF Molesworth, a Nato intelligence hub.
  • MI5 recently issued a public warning to academics about working with a Chinese organisation suspected of espionage.

UK military bases are currently on high alert following a series of security incidents and alleged plots. US planes were recalled from RAF Fairford last week after an alleged terrorist plot to attack the base, which the Prime Minister stated had "strong indications that Iran played a part".

This incident follows a security breach at RAF Brize Norton last year and news this summer that the Manchester synagogue attacker had investigated security at the nearby Shrivenham defence academy. On Thursday, two Latvians were arrested on suspicion of trespass inside RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire, which houses a Nato intelligence hub.

The Cabinet Office recently briefed CEOs of critical infrastructure companies on the threat of Russian sabotage. Last week, MI5 issued a public warning to academics against collaborating with a Chinese organisation believed to be a front for espionage.
