Ukrainian rail passengers are facing increased disruption and long delays as Russian drone attacks intensify. State-owned railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia reported that 5,831 trains were evacuated in September due to these attacks, meaning an average of 205 trains were stopped each day.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, attacks on locomotives have risen, with nearly 60% of all 521 recorded strikes occurring this year. Overall attacks on railway facilities have also increased from 1,206 in 2025 to 1,700 so far this year.
Ukrzaliznytsia is implementing precautions, including evacuating trains within a 100km radius of a detected drone. The company is also preparing for winter, planning winter evacuation packs, mobile shelters, and bus services for areas with frequent evacuations.
