The US Open has announced a record total prize fund of $108m (approximately £80m) for this year's tournament. This figure marks a 20% increase for the second year in succession, making it the highest ever offered in tennis.
Men's and women's singles champions will each receive $5.5m (approximately £4m), with first-round exits earning over £100,000. Tournament directors hope this historic payout will help prevent a repeat of player protests seen at the French Open and Wimbledon.
Alongside the financial updates, major tournaments have jointly announced the establishment of a grand slam player advisory council. This new panel aims to address player concerns regarding their influence over decision-making and will act as a forum for direct communication and feedback. The council will launch after the US Open, which runs from August 30 to September 13, and will also address player welfare.
In other news, Carlos Alcaraz will make his return to competitive tennis at the US Open. The 23-year-old has been out of action since April due to a wrist injury, which caused him to miss the French Open, Wimbledon, and the Cincinnati Open.
