The family of Kirandeep Kaur, a 24-year-old woman tragically killed in her west London home, have found solace in the community vigils held following her death. Ms Kaur was fatally stabbed on 12 July while in bed with her baby and husband at her residence on Uxbridge Road in Hayes.
Speaking from India, her eldest brother, Paljinder Singh, conveyed his family's gratitude for the public demonstrations of support. He told BBC London that seeing the vigils provided comfort, knowing that people in the UK were standing in solidarity with them during their profound grief. Mr Singh added, "If we'd known what was going to happen, we would never have let her go."
Ms Kaur had relocated to the UK two years prior to pursue her studies at Buckinghamshire New University before taking up work at a local grocery store. Her family, residing in Tarn Taran, Punjab, had initially believed she would move to Canada, but circumstances led her to London. "We never thought when she left, just two years ago... we never thought she would never come back," Mr Singh lamented, speaking through a translator.
Describing his younger sister, Mr Singh painted a picture of a compassionate individual. "She was a lovely person. If you asked anyone in the village, they would say that. She would never say anything bad about anybody. She never said no to helping anyone," he shared. He added that her presence brought joy, and her loss has irrevocably altered their lives, stating, "After what has happened, things will never be normal again. All my life, I will never forget her."
In the wake of Ms Kaur's death, several marches and vigils have been organised by the local community across west London. Mr Singh expressed deep appreciation for the turnout and the solidarity shown from hundreds of miles away, highlighting the family's hope that such a tragedy will not befall another family. The family is also keen to have Ms Kaur's body repatriated to India, with Mr Singh stating, "I will never speak to her on the phone again, but I want to see her one last time."
Daniel Sean James, 46, of Mercer Place, Pinner, has been charged in connection with Ms Kaur's death. He is accused of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a blade. Mr James appeared via videolink at the Old Bailey from Wormwood Scrubs on Thursday, where a plea hearing was set for 1 October. He remains in custody.
