Volkswagen has unveiled a new prototype electric vehicle, the Mission Efficiency, which the company states is capable of achieving the equivalent of 323 miles per gallon under ideal conditions. This makes it one of the most efficient cars globally.
The prototype completed a 794-mile (1,278-kilometer) journey from Volkswagen's base in Wolfsburg, Germany, to Vienna. During the trip, the team charged the vehicle once and arrived with 104 miles (168 kilometers) of range remaining, demonstrating a consumption of 7.51 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, or approximately 279 MPGe.
The teardrop-shaped Mission Efficiency prototype incorporates the electric motor and battery from the ID. Polo, which Volkswagen says brings the car to "near production" status. The vehicle's design includes a Kammback roofline, contributing to a low coefficient of drag of 0.158.
The Mission Efficiency is a 2+2 vehicle, with rear seats designed for individuals shorter than 5-foot 3 inches (1.6 meters). Volkswagen also included solar cells on the roof and trunk lid, which are estimated to add 18 miles (30 kilometers) of range on flat, sunny routes driven at a constant 42.25 mph (68 kph).
Inside, the prototype features lightweight seats and omits an infotainment system, instead offering a portable Bluetooth speaker and relying on drivers' own devices.
