A volunteer police officer, Sophie Hyde, helped save a man's life on her first day as a special constable. She was called to Warmington at 19:40 BST on 30 July with fellow Northamptonshire Police special constables Lorna Montecalvo and Pete Isom following concerns for a man's welfare.
Hyde spotted the man in the River Nene, near Cambridgeshire, and held a torch for Montecalvo, who swam out to the unconscious man and towed him to the bank. Isom, who cannot swim, also entered the water, holding onto reeds to assist.
Northamptonshire Police stated that the officers, along with Northampton Search & Rescue and the National Police Air Service, located the man in the water at approximately 23:20 BST, opposite Elton Quarry, after a member of the public found his rucksack by the river. The trio, with the help of the member of the public, brought the man to safety.
