Volvo is expanding its partnership with Nvidia to enhance its automated driving systems. The companies announced on Thursday that future Volvo vehicles will incorporate three components from Nvidia: the Hyperion sensor and compute architecture, the Alpamayo driving software stack, and the Halos safety evaluation layer.
This expanded collaboration will combine Volvo's vehicle safety systems and engineering with Nvidia's technology. The Alpamayo stack, described by Ali Kani, head of Nvidia’s automotive division, as redundant and diverse, integrates AI models, datasets, simulation tools, and classical software using machine learning with camera and radar perception.
Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo’s head of software development, indicated that this move signifies Volvo's shift towards developing a full-tech stack for its electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and gas-powered vehicles. The first vehicle to feature this new Nvidia tech stack is anticipated to launch within the next decade.
