Wakefield Trinity's players have the chance to achieve 'immortality' by completing a remarkable turnaround and becoming Super League champions, according to coach Daryl Powell. Trinity are set to face the Warrington Wolves in the Grand Final at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Powell, who previously coached Castleford to Old Trafford in 2017, told his team that a win would make everyone involved 'instant club legends'. This opportunity follows their semi-final victory over Wigan, bringing them within 80 minutes of ending over half a century without a major honour.
Club owner Matt Ellis, a boyhood fan, expressed his surprise that the club's resurgence has arrived two years ahead of the five-year plan he embarked on with Powell in 2023. Ellis noted the significant increase in fan engagement, with supporters travelling from abroad and the club selling out of merchandise.
The team has been built with a mix of experienced players like Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken, alongside overseas talents such as Caius Faatili, Caleb Hamlin Uele, and Jazz Tevaga. Powell's attack-minded philosophy is believed to be a reason why the final is expected to draw a crowd of over 70,000 to Old Trafford, a figure not seen since 2017.
