Wakefield Trinity have pulled off a sensational upset, reaching their inaugural Super League Grand Final by defeating Wigan Warriors 33-6 in a thrilling play-off semi-final. This victory shatters Wigan's aspirations of securing a treble in 2026.
After a tight first half, with Wakefield leading 8-6, the visitors capitalised on Adam Keighran's second-half yellow card. Tom Johnstone, Jack Sinfield, and Corey Hall all crossed the try line while the Wigan centre was in the sin-bin, contributing to Wakefield's 33 unanswered points.
Wakefield, who were a Championship side in 2024, have made significant strides under owner Matt Ellis and head coach Daryl Powell. They now stand just one win away from being crowned Super League champions, and will face Warrington Wolves in the final at Old Trafford on Saturday, 3 October.
Wigan entered the semi-final on a 16-game winning streak, having already secured the Challenge Cup and the League Leaders' Shield. However, their hopes of reaching a fourth consecutive Grand Final were dashed by Wakefield's outstanding performance.
