Wakefield Trinity have booked their place in a first Super League Grand Final after a remarkable 33-6 victory over Wigan Warriors in the playoff semi-final. Trinity, who were in the second tier two years ago, delivered an exceptional performance to end Wigan's bid for a 16th consecutive league win.
The visitors, backed by over 5,000 travelling supporters, scored five tries to Wigan's one. They will now face Warrington Wolves at Old Trafford next Saturday, ensuring a new name will be on the Super League trophy for the second season in a row.
Wakefield built a 30-6 lead, with Tom Johnstone claiming two tries. Jack Sinfield and Corey Hall also scored during a seven-minute period when Wigan's Adam Keighran was in the sin-bin. Ky Rodwell added another try, while Mason Lino and Max Jowitt contributed a drop goal and penalties respectively.
The club has seen a significant turnaround since local businessman Matt Ellis took over in late 2023, investing in the playing squad and modernising their Belle Vue home.
