Wales Rugby Stars Remain Connected to Community Clubs

Elite Welsh rugby players, including current internationals, are actively involved with their boyhood and community clubs, taking on coaching and director roles.

  • Josh Adams, a Wales international with 70 caps, is assistant attack coach at his former club Hendy.
  • Wales back-row Aaron Wainwright serves as director of rugby for Whiteheads RFC.
  • Wales centre Joe Hawkins, 23, helps out at Ystalyfera, citing his family's deep connection to the club.

Unlike many elite sports where players often leave their roots behind, numerous past and present Welsh rugby professionals maintain strong ties to their community clubs. This involvement includes taking on coaching and directorial roles, often while still active in their professional careers.

Josh Adams, a British and Irish Lion and 70-cap Wales international, has taken on the role of assistant attack coach at his boyhood club, Hendy. Similarly, Wales back-row Aaron Wainwright, who plays for Leicester Tigers, is the director of rugby for Whiteheads RFC.

Other players contributing to community rugby include Wales centre Joe Hawkins at Ystalyfera, Wales back-row Harri Deaves at Pontyclun, and former Wales Under-20s captain Ryan Woodman at Caldicot. Justin Tipuric, a former Wales and Lions forward, also coached at Trebanos for years.

Joe Hawkins, 23, explained his motivation, stating, "Ystalyfera is in my blood." He noted that his grandfather was chairman and president, his grandmother worked in the burger van, and his mother was a physio at the club. Hawkins clarified that his involvement is not for money or professional development, but for the love of the game and to enjoy community rugby away from the pressures of the professional game.

Why this matters: This trend highlights a unique aspect of Welsh rugby, where professional players maintain strong connections to their community roots, potentially strengthening the link between the professional and grassroots game.
