Danny Welbeck opened his goalscoring account for Chelsea as Xabi Alonso's team defeated Luton 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup second round. Welbeck's far-post header just after half-time broke the deadlock, following a cross from Malo Gusto.
Alonso fielded a strong line-up, though notable absences included Enzo Fernandez, who was not in the squad amid an expected transfer bid from Manchester City. Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was benched, leading to a debut for 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders. A deal was also agreed on the same day for Chelsea to sign Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez.
Estevao, making his first start of the season, provided the cross that Luton defender Hakeem Odoffin turned into his own net late in the game, securing Chelsea's 2-0 win. Despite Luton's organised defence, the result for Chelsea never appeared to be in jeopardy.
