Wisconsin voters will decide today whether to nominate a democratic socialist for the state’s highest office. Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist state lawmaker, has emerged as the frontrunner in a four-way Democratic primary race to succeed Governor Tony Evers, who is not seeking another term.
Governor Evers has endorsed David Crowley, the Milwaukee county executive, who re-entered the race on 18 July. Crowley and Evers have toured the state, focusing on electability in a swing state like Wisconsin.
Hong, a chef and former restaurant owner, was first elected to the state assembly in 2020. Her platform includes childcare for all, free school meals, and a one-year moratorium on new data centre construction. A Marquette University Law School survey in late July found Hong leading, though many voters were undecided.
The winner of the primary will face Republican congressman Tom Tiffany, an ardent supporter of Donald Trump, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
