Work begins on new Cheadle train station after century-long wait

Work has started on a new train station in Cheadle, Stockport, more than 100 years after its original station closed. The project faced delays due to concerns about its impact on other train services.

  • Work has begun on a new train station in Cheadle, Stockport.
  • Cheadle has been without a train station since its original one closed in 1917.
  • Services are expected to connect Cheadle to Stockport town, Manchester Piccadilly, and Chester.

Work has commenced on bringing a train station back to Cheadle, Stockport, over a century after its original station closed in 1917. The new hub will be built next to Alexandra Hospital.

Funding for the station was approved in 2022, and planning permission was granted in 2023. The project experienced delays due to concerns regarding its potential effect on train timetabling elsewhere on the network.

Stockport Council has confirmed that the timetabling issue has been resolved. Council leader Mark Roberts stated that initial highways work can now begin on site.

The latest assessment by Network Rail and Northern Trains concluded that Cheadle Station can be introduced without removing services at Ashley and Plumley, a previous proposal to address the timetabling concerns.

Services are anticipated to run from Cheadle to Stockport town, Manchester Piccadilly, and Chester.

Why this matters: The new station is expected to connect Cheadle's 23,000 residents to jobs, schools, and opportunities across Greater Manchester, and may help reduce road traffic.
