World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open due to a knee injury. The Italian, who has not played competitively since winning Wimbledon in July, stated that despite working hard with his team, he needs more time to recover.
Sinner's decision comes a day after his rival Carlos Alcaraz announced his participation in the tournament following a four-month absence. Sinner expressed his sadness and disappointment, noting that New York holds a special place in his heart.
Britain's Jack Draper has also pulled out of the US Open because of a long-term arm injury. Draper, who lost to Sinner in the 2024 US Open semi-finals, has played only 16 matches in the past 12 months and missed all four Grand Slam tournaments this year.
In Sinner's absence, Germany's Alexander Zverev will be the top seed at Flushing Meadows, followed by Alcaraz and Canadian third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. The US Open singles main draws are scheduled to begin on Sunday, August 30.
