Wrexham closing in on Burnley defender Joe Worrall ahead of transfer deadline

Wrexham are reportedly close to signing Burnley centre-back Joe Worrall, with the deal expected to be completed before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

  • Wrexham are yet to keep a clean sheet and have not won any of their opening four matches this season.
  • Joe Worrall has made only one appearance for Burnley this season, in the EFL Cup.
  • The potential arrival of Worrall could lead to Conor Coady's departure from Wrexham.

Wrexham are reportedly nearing a deal to bring Burnley defender Joe Worrall to the Racecourse Ground. Manager Phil Parkinson is keen to bolster his defensive options, with the 29-year-old centre-back expected to join before the transfer window closes on Tuesday at 23:00 BST.

Worrall has been an unused substitute in Burnley's first three Championship games this season, making his sole appearance in an EFL Cup victory over Notts County on August 8. Wrexham, meanwhile, have struggled defensively, failing to keep a clean sheet in their opening four matches and remaining winless across all competitions in the 2026-27 season.

Parkinson expressed his frustration after a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham City, stating his side conceded "two of the softest goals" of his tenure. The potential arrival of Worrall could also pave the way for England international Conor Coady, who joined Wrexham last summer, to leave the Welsh club. Coady has not been included in any of Wrexham's four matchday squads this season.

Worrall began his career at Nottingham Forest, making 226 appearances before moving to Burnley in 2024. He was named Forest's player of the season in 2020-21 and played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League in 2021-22.

Why this matters: This potential signing could address Wrexham's defensive vulnerabilities and impact the squad's composition, particularly concerning Conor Coady's future.
