YouTube Music announced on Wednesday the rollout of a new labeling system designed to improve transparency regarding songs created with generative AI. Listeners will now be able to easily identify tracks that have used AI in their composition or vocals.
These labels will be visible on the player page within YouTube Music and will also extend to the main YouTube app. Clicking on a label will provide further details about the specific role of AI in the track's creation.
YouTube collaborated with music partners and used its own detection tools to identify AI-generated music. Partners can declare AI use through designations such as “Fully Gen AI” for entirely AI-generated tracks or “Partly Gen AI” for works incorporating AI components alongside live elements. Tracks using pitch-correction tools like Auto-Tune will fall under “No Gen AI.”
The platform is focusing on disclosure, and AI involvement alone will not make a track ineligible for monetization. This approach differs from some other streaming services, such as Deezer and TIDAL, which exclude detected AI-generated music from algorithmic recommendations, editorial playlists, or royalty attribution.
