Zheng Qinwen has continued her impressive US Open journey, securing a spot in the quarter-finals by overcoming former champion Iga Swiatek. The 23-year-old Chinese player, who was the reigning Olympic champion, clinched a 7-5 6-3 victory.
Remarkably, Zheng recovered from a 5-0 deficit in the opening set against Poland's eighth seed Swiatek, winning 13 of the next 16 games on Arthur Ashe Stadium. This follows a similar comeback in her third-round match on Saturday, where she trailed Madison Keys 5-0 in the deciding set before winning seven consecutive games.
Zheng, who had dropped outside the world's top 100 earlier this year after elbow surgery in July 2025, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "The more matches I play, the more rhythm I have on court." This latest win, her seventh in a row in New York including three qualifying rounds, is expected to propel her back to the brink of the top 50. She is set to face either Naomi Osaka or Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere in the tournament, French Open winner Mirra Andreeva also progressed to the last eight in New York for the first time in her career, recovering from a first-set loss against Anastasia Potapova.
