Zion Suzuki has made history by becoming the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the Premier League, joining Aston Villa. The 23-year-old is set to take over from World Cup winner Emiliano Martínez.
Suzuki, who has a Japanese mother and a Ghanaian-American father, has previously played for Urawa Reds, Sint-Truiden in Belgium, and Parma in Italy. He established himself at Parma after signing a five-year deal 12 months ago.
His athleticism and shot-stopping abilities are noted, with his performance at the World Cup, including a low save from Vinícius Júnior, catching attention. While his positioning can still improve, he was second in Serie A last season for crosses caught and high claims, and also for successful long passes.
Suzuki has faced challenges, including racist abuse online after Japan's exit from the Asian Cup at the quarter-final stage, where he received blame for errors. He stated, "I’ve received [discriminatory comments] since elementary school, but I won’t give in to them."
