Nina Segal's experimental reimagining of the Sophoclean tragedy, Antigone Exits, is currently being staged at the Minerva theatre in Chichester. The production, directed by Jeff James, explores the far-reaching consequences of actions.
The play features a black, tar-like substance dribbled onto a bright yellow stage, creating a circle that symbolises a dividing line. This substance later spreads, affecting characters in the play.
Cast members, including Max Bennett as King Creon and Nina Cassells as Antigone, break the fourth wall and deliver direct addresses. They also relay anecdotes that appear to be personal, such as stories of a decomposing fox, a dying husband, and a teenage daughter's suicide.
Alex Lowde's set design includes a giant hollowed-out eggshell structure, from which the cast emerges. This structure later transforms into a cave.
