Premier League champions Arsenal are reportedly set to bolster their squad with the acquisition of Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa for around £51m. This move would push their summer transfer expenditure past the £150m mark, following earlier signings of Bruno Guimaraes (£75m) and Christos Tzolis (£34m).
The decision to bring in another established centre-back comes despite Arsenal already having seven senior defenders on their books. Manager Mikel Arteta's strategy appears to address significant injury concerns within his backline, as key defenders William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are both ruled out for the initial part of the season.
Saliba is facing an extended period on the sidelines due to a long-term back issue, while Timber is recovering from a groin problem. Konsa, a 28-year-old England international, brings a strong defensive record, having lifted the Europa League with Villa last season and boasting impressive Premier League statistics for ground duel success and passing accuracy.
Arteta has previously emphasised the need for the Gunners to be "very ambitious, very fast, and very smart" to build on their Premier League triumph. The club's chief executive, Richard Garlick, has also stated that joining the world's superclubs is Arsenal's ambition, with efforts to increase revenue and explore stadium expansion plans underway.
