A traditional British symbol is undergoing a vibrant transformation thanks to UK artist Linett Kamala. Kamala is reinjecting life into maypole dancing by swapping traditional English folk tunes for pounding beats of dancehall and drum'n'bass, complete with bass bins and LED lights.
Kamala’s inspiration struck when she encountered a maypole in a Jamaican hamlet, an unexpected sight that she described as a colonial relic, yet one that appeared to be bringing joy. This experience prompted her to consider how such a tradition could be reimagined for a contemporary audience, particularly within the diverse cultural landscape of the UK.
In community centres across London, the familiar scene of a ping pong table, a treadmill, and computers gives way to a towering green structure adorned with multicoloured ribbons – a modern maypole. Here, participants are introduced to Kamala's unique fusion, where the intricate weaving of ribbons around the pole is synchronised with a new, energetic soundtrack.
