Australia concluded the third day of the first Test against South Africa with a 139-run lead in Durban. Steve Smith set a new record for most Test catches, bringing his total to 223 and surpassing England's Joe Root, who held the previous record of 220.

Smith took four catches, including two off Nathan Lyon's spin bowling and a flying dive to dismiss David Bedingham. His final catch ended South Africa's innings at 284, in response to Australia's first innings total of 390. At stumps, Australia were 33 without loss in their second innings.

South Africa's batsmen struggled, with Bedingham top-scoring with 49. Pat Cummins took 3-54 for Australia, while Josh Hazlewood, Mitch Starc, and Lyon each claimed two wickets. Bad light has caused early finishes on all three days of the Test, and extra time will be added to Monday's sessions.
