Burnham faces PMQs amid rising borrowing costs and tax debate

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to face his first Prime Minister's Questions today, with discussions likely to focus on tax and borrowing amidst rising government borrowing costs.

  • Andy Burnham will face PMQs for the first time as Prime Minister today.
  • Government long-term borrowing costs reached their highest level since early 1998 on Tuesday.
  • A Resolution Foundation report suggests tax rises for ordinary workers may be necessary to increase defence spending.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is scheduled to face his first Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) today, with Kemi Badenoch expected to question him on tax, benefit cuts, and the economy.

This comes as government long-term borrowing costs increased to their highest level since early 1998 on Tuesday. This rise in borrowing costs has reportedly reduced the Treasury's fiscal safety net by £12bn.

The Resolution Foundation thinktank has published a report suggesting that if defence spending is to increase, as proposed by the Prime Minister, then taxes for ordinary workers will likely need to rise. The report indicates that the UK remains in the bottom third of comparable OECD countries for the level of tax on an average worker.

Why this matters: The rise in government borrowing costs has reduced the Treasury's fiscal safety net, potentially impacting future spending decisions.
