Charity Commission launches inquiry into Crossfields Institute over governance

The Charity Commission has opened a statutory inquiry into Crossfields Institute, an education charity, due to concerns about its governance and financial management.

  • The inquiry was launched on 7 September 2026 under section 46 of the Charities Act 2011.
  • Concerns include whether the charity has enough trustees and appropriate financial controls.
  • Crossfields Institute failed to submit accounting information for the financial years ending 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The Charity Commission has initiated a statutory inquiry into Crossfields Institute, an education charity based in Stroud. The inquiry, opened on 7 September 2026, stems from regulatory concerns regarding potential misconduct or mismanagement in the charity's administration.

The charity was previously placed in the Commission's double defaulters class inquiry in September 2025 for failing to submit its accounting information for the financial years ending 31 March 2023 and 2024. It subsequently defaulted again for the 2025 financial year.

Additional concerns identified by the Commission include whether Crossfields Institute has a sufficient number of trustees, if appropriate financial controls are in place to manage charity funds, and if its operations may have been transferred to a non-charitable company.

The inquiry will examine the trustees' compliance with legal duties concerning the charity's administration, governance, and management, including financial oversight, connected party transactions, potential conflicts of interest, and decision-making.
