Chelsea completed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, a move that came after Arsenal reportedly 'dithered' in their negotiations. Chelsea had initially considered a deal for Rogers unlikely, expecting him to join Arsenal after their disappointing 10th-place finish last season.
However, a 'window of opportunity' emerged towards the end of the World Cup as Arsenal, despite winning the Premier League, delayed talks with Villa. Chelsea, with Xabi Alonso and the recruitment team identifying Rogers as a priority, moved decisively. The club had been tracking Rogers since his time at Middlesbrough and leveraged their relationship with Villa's owners.
The deal was confirmed five days after negotiations began, following Rogers' appearance in England's World Cup semi-final. Arsenal, who had a fee of £80m in mind while Villa sought more, ultimately signed Christos Tzolis for £34m instead.
Rogers has made an excellent start at Chelsea, contributing to four of their seven goals in the first two league games. He scored in the 3-2 win against Fulham and played a key role in goals against Brighton. The 24-year-old, who was the Professional Footballers’ Association’s young player of the year in 2025, is now the third-most expensive player in English football history.
