Two men returning from a Royal Caribbean cruise in Galveston, Texas, reportedly discovered hundreds of baby spiders covering their car in the Cruise Terminal 10 parking lot. The Lubbock residents, believed to be in their 20s, were picked up by an Uber driver who stated they showed him photos and videos of the spiders.
The Uber driver, Donnie Broussard, told the Chron that the men were "freaked out" by the situation. He also noted that several other passengers had reported finding spiders on their vehicles in the same parking area a few weeks prior.
A possible explanation for the sightings was offered by a community group user, who stated that September is a prime time for spiderlings. They explained that spiderlings disperse by releasing silk strands, a behaviour known as 'ballooning', which allows wind to carry them to various surfaces, including cars. One egg sac could contain 300 or more spiderlings.
Pearsall's S&S Pest Control in South Texas indicates that spider activity often becomes more noticeable from late summer into fall, as outdoor lights attract insects, which in turn attract spiders. The Independent has contacted the Port of Galveston for comment.
