David Balfe, a veteran of the music industry, has released his first music in decades. In a recent interview, he spoke about his time with the Teardrop Explodes, a band that formed in the late 1970s. Balfe, who was the band's manager, recalls a particularly wild appearance on Top of the Pops, where he tripped on stage. He also took amyl nitrate on The Old Grey Whistle Test and acid on another Top of the Pops appearance.
During his time with the Teardrop Explodes, Balfe worked with Julian Cope, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship. Cope has previously punched Balfe in a fit of rage. Balfe has also spoken about signing the Proclaimers, a Scottish duo known for their hit song 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)'. The Proclaimers' music is now available to stream on platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.
More recently, Balfe has formed a new trio inspired by the work of Scott Walker. The trio's music is a departure from Balfe's earlier work with the Teardrop Explodes. When asked about his decision to release new music, Balfe joked that it would be included in his Guardian obituary.
