A major outage has affected parts of the Netherlands' railway system, with Dutch authorities investigating suspected sabotage. Objects placed on tracks are believed to have caused the disruption.

Dutch rail infrastructure operator Pro Rail stated that these objects led to failures across the network. This also impacted several level crossings, causing disruption to road traffic.

Pro Rail explained that the computer system identifies sections of track as occupied even without a train present. This results in signals automatically turning red and trains needing to stop or slow down, and level crossings potentially malfunctioning.
