The Metropolitan Police seized approximately 90 supercars in London during the second weekend of August. These vehicles had a combined value of more than £8 million.
Special Chief Inspector Geoff Tatman of the Metropolitan Police recalled one of the first seizures, a £600,000 Lamborghini, stopped for speeding in a 20mph zone. Other seized cars included a Ferrari Monza valued at about £3.4 million, driven by someone with only a provisional UK licence.
The seizures were made for various offences, including driving without insurance, driving with incorrect licences, or antisocial behaviour. This marks an increase from the 72 cars seized in August of the previous year. The law, specifically section 59 of the Police Reform Act, was strengthened this year to allow for immediate vehicle confiscation.
Many of the supercars apprehended in August had Middle Eastern number plates. Most owners retrieved their vehicles the following day after paying fines and presenting the correct paperwork.
