Lawrence Abu Hamdan, a Lebanese-British artist who jointly won the Turner Prize in 2019, also directs Earshot, an NGO established in 2023. Earshot focuses on investigating human rights abuses through the analysis of sound evidence.
The organisation's work includes examining the direction and position of bullets fired by Israeli soldiers in Gaza and building evidence regarding the alleged use of a sonic weapon to disperse a vigil in Belgrade.
In March 2025, Earshot received numerous individual requests for help following a mass silent anti-government protest in Belgrade. The Serbian government denied using a sonic weapon to disperse the crowd, which gathered after a deadly railway station accident the previous year. Earshot's team amassed thousands of witness statements and concluded that a US-made LRAD 450XL device likely produced the sound.
The NGO also works on cold cases, such as a political assassination where new recordings led them to believe the convicted person was a decoy and the murder weapon was wielded by another individual.
