Formula 1 has confirmed that the maximum race distance for grands prix will be shortened by 15km, moving from 305km to 290km, effective for the 2027 season. This adjustment means cars will cover less ground in the pursuit of victory.
The reduction comes as the ratio of internal combustion to electrical power is set to change, leading to increased fuel consumption. This raised concerns for teams planning to carry over chassis, and thus fixed fuel tank sizes, into the next year.
In a further rule modification, a 'hard stop time' will be introduced to replace the current three-hour maximum duration for finishing disrupted events. This aims to provide greater flexibility to complete races affected by incidents or weather, with the stop time varying based on local conditions, such as at night races.
The governing body, the FIA, stated that these changes were introduced to ensure spectators have the best possible chance to enjoy a full race if disruptions occur. Additionally, the F1 Commission has agreed to allow greater flexibility to extend free practice sessions if they are interrupted.
