Liverpool FC's former CEO Peter Moore has indicated that the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), may be preparing for a sale. However, Moore has poured cold water on suggestions that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos could be involved in a takeover.
FSG is currently in discussions to sell a minority stake to Amit Bhatia, formerly a co-owner of QPR. Some reports have suggested this process could eventually lead to the American group's departure from Merseyside.
Moore, who led Liverpool from 2017 to 2020, pointed to the age of FSG chiefs John Henry and Tom Werner, both in their mid-70s. He told the Blood Red podcast that people in their 70s often begin to consider their legacy and estate.
Moore believes Bezos, the world's fourth richest person, has not shown interest in football. He suggested that while Bezos might receive an email about joining a consortium, it does not mean he would accept. Moore added that football requires people who understand the culture and are willing to engage deeply, which he sees as the attraction of Amit Bhatia and the Mittal family.
FSG acquired Liverpool 16 years ago for £300m, and Moore estimates the club could now be worth £4.5bn.
