Galeri, the arts and culture centre located in Caernarfon, Gwynedd, has implemented a new policy barring unaccompanied under-16s from attending evening cinema screenings. The decision, effective immediately, comes as a direct response to a notable increase in reports of anti-social behaviour within its premises, particularly during later film showings.
Under the revised regulations, any individual under the age of 16 wishing to attend a film screening that commences after 5pm must now be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. This measure is intended to address the growing concerns raised by other patrons and staff regarding disruptive conduct, ensuring a more pleasant and safe environment for all cinema-goers.
A spokesperson for Galeri confirmed that the introduction of the ban was a necessary step to maintain the integrity of the cinema experience. They highlighted that while Galeri aims to be an inclusive venue for all age groups, the recent pattern of behaviour by some younger, unaccompanied individuals had necessitated this intervention. The centre has previously operated an open-door policy for all ages, making this a significant shift in its operational approach.
This move by Galeri is not an isolated incident within the UK cinema industry. Several other cinema chains and independent venues across the country have, in recent years, introduced similar restrictions or increased security measures to combat issues of anti-social behaviour, including excessive noise, vandalism, and general disruption during screenings.
