Glasgow landlord loses HMO licence over fire safety failures

A Glasgow landlord has been refused an HMO licence renewal for a Sauchiehall Street flat due to unresolved fire safety concerns, despite warnings from their letting agent.

  • Glasgow City Council's licensing committee rejected Anna McMullan's application to renew an HMO licence.
  • Multiple fire safety problems were identified by the council's HMO team and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
  • The letting agent reportedly sent the landlord repair quotes for remedial work, which were rejected.

A Glasgow landlord has lost an HMO licence after Glasgow City Council's licensing committee rejected an application to renew the licence for a flat in Sauchiehall Street. The decision followed the identification of serious fire safety concerns that reportedly remained unaddressed.

Anna McMullan's application was refused after inspections by the council's HMO team and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service found multiple safety problems. The letting agent informed the committee that they had previously sent the landlord several quotes for remedial work, which were rejected.

Firefighters first inspected the property in February, finding issues such as fire doors not closing properly, obstructed escape routes, and excessive combustible material. A second inspection in September found that several problems persisted, including fire doors still failing to close correctly and excessive gaps beneath doors.

Committee chairman Alex Wilson questioned why tenants occupied the property despite the outstanding safety concerns. The letting agent stated they believed all deficiencies had been addressed before new tenants moved in during August, but the fire service declined to approve the HMO licence application.
