Global punk rock band Green Day is venturing into filmmaking with "Nimrods," a coming-of-age comedy. The film draws partial inspiration from the band's early years as musicians.
Written and directed by Lee Kirk, the narrative follows three adolescents pursuing shared musical dreams. The band notes this journey reflects key elements of their own rise, with lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong recalling their initial dream to play a gig.
The plot sees Tommy, played by Mason Thames, aspiring to open for Green Day. After his brother Wayne convinces him that Green Day invited his band to open a New Year's Eve concert, Tommy and bandmates Fred (Kyle Coffman) and Chad (Ryan Foust) embark on a cross-country trip from Kansas to Los Angeles. Drummer Tre Cool noted that this cross-country plot line draws directly on Green Day's early tour experiences.
Bassist Mike Dirnt stated the film aims to capture the band's youthful mindset and rock-and-roll attitude. Armstrong also mentioned that the comedy drew creative influence from films like "Rushmore" and the work of director John Hughes. While Green Day plays a central role in the narrative, the group largely stays off-screen, with their music featured prominently on the soundtrack. "Nimrods," produced by Live Nation Studios, is set to arrive in US theaters on August 14.
