John Hinckley Jr., the man who attempted to assassinate Ronald Reagan in 1981 to impress Jodie Foster, has wished the actor well in a new interview. Hinckley, 71, spoke about the two-time Oscar winner with the Mark Joseph Show, according to Entertainment Weekly's preview.
“I just wish Jodie Foster well, you know,” Hinckley said. “I don’t really see her movies, but I wish her well, and I know she’s doing quite well. And that’s all I can say is just, I wish Jodie well, and I hope she has a good life.”
Hinckley shot President Ronald Reagan and three others outside a Washington, D.C. hotel on March 30, 1981. He later revealed he carried out the attack to gain Foster's attention, having become obsessed with her after seeing her 1976 film, Taxi Driver.
After a seven-week trial in 1982, Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity. He spent 35 years in a psychiatric facility before his release in 2022. Since his release, Hinckley has spoken about his remorse and is pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter.
