Following the conclusion of the first 48-team World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has hinted at a further expansion of the tournament to 64 teams. FIFA Vice-President Alejandro Dominguez is reportedly in favour of this change, suggesting it could happen as early as the 2030 edition.
Infantino previously championed the expansion to 48 teams, which was approved in 2017. However, this latest proposal is expected to encounter greater resistance, with UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin reportedly deeming the suggestion a "bad idea."
The potential expansion is also linked to Infantino's plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, a scheme that has drawn criticism and led UEFA to threaten a boycott of FIFA tournaments. The 2030 World Cup is set to be hosted across six countries and three continents, including Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina.
