Irish Premiership 2026-27 Season Kicks Off After Summer of Uncertainty

The 2026-27 Irish Premiership season has begun, 104 days after Larne lifted the Gibson Cup, with a north Belfast derby between Cliftonville and Crusaders.

  • Larne aims for a fourth Irish Premiership title in five years, despite star striker Andy Ryan's departure.
  • Coleraine has strengthened its squad with Northern Ireland international Conor McMenamin and Ben Doherty.
  • Linfield and Glentoran have made a combined seven summer signings, with both clubs hoping for improved seasons.

The Irish Premiership 2026-27 season has officially commenced, following a summer marked by transfers, preparations, and a recent threat of delay. The opening match is a north Belfast derby featuring Cliftonville and Crusaders.

Larne, who secured their third Irish Premiership title in four years last season, will be looking to defend the Gibson Cup. However, they face the challenge of replacing the goals of star striker Andy Ryan, who has departed.

Last season's runners-up, Coleraine, have made notable additions to their squad, including Northern Ireland international Conor McMenamin and Derry City left-back Ben Doherty. Despite these signings, the club faces a considerable injury list, particularly in defence, with captain Mark Coyle sidelined due to an ACL problem, and Aidan Wilson, Ryan Schofield, and Cameron Stewart also injured.

Meanwhile, Belfast's 'Big Two', Linfield and Glentoran, have had a quieter transfer window, making a combined total of seven summer signings. Glentoran finished third last season without silverware, while Linfield, despite winning the BetMcLean Cup, had a season that raised concerns after losing Joel Cooper last summer.

Bangor, who finished 10th last season, will aim to avoid 'second season syndrome' after winning only one of their final 14 games. Newly promoted Limavady will look to striker John Butcher to be key in their bid to avoid a relegation battle.

This season also marks a significant period for experienced managers David Jeffrey, Stephen Baxter, and Oran Kearney. Jeffrey returns to Portadown after three years out, Baxter begins his second full campaign at Carrick Rangers, and Kearney has made significant changes at Ballymena United with 10 new signings and 17 departures.

Why this matters: The start of the Irish Premiership season brings new challenges and expectations for clubs, with Larne aiming to continue their dominance and other teams strengthening their squads.
