Kevin Pietersen has taken up a new position as a specialist mentor for England's white-ball teams. Brendon McCullum, England's white-ball coach, confirmed he was the primary force behind Pietersen's recruitment, giving him specific instructions to "look across the environment and challenge me".
Pietersen spent his initial day in the role observing training at the Utilita Bowl. According to McCullum, an address delivered by Pietersen left the players "buzzing".
McCullum also mentioned that Pietersen initially thought the offer was a joke, acknowledging his past criticisms of the team. Pietersen has been encouraged not to focus on a single discipline but to provide a different perspective on improving the team and coaching structure.
Separately, Stephen Fleming, the long-term replacement for the red-ball head coach, arrived in the country on Monday. His schedule includes visits to counties, the national cricket performance centre, and meetings with Test captain Joe Root and the white-ball squad.
England will begin their series against Sri Lanka without Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell, and Sam Curran due to fitness issues, while Jofra Archer is rested. Brydon Carse is absent for disciplinary reasons, with Aneurin Donald set to make his debut as opener.
