The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has confirmed it is one of the organisations facing possible criminal action in connection with the Grenfell Tower fire. The Metropolitan Police earlier this week submitted an evidence file to prosecutors concerning 20 organisations and firms, as well as 54 individuals.
The police are seeking charges that include corporate manslaughter, gross negligence manslaughter, health and safety offences, and fraud-related offences, all related to the deaths of 72 people in the 2017 disaster. London fire commissioner Jonathan Smith welcomed the progress in the investigation.
The Met's investigation, known as Operation Northleigh, began shortly after the fire in June 2017. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has stated that any charging decisions will be made before the 10th anniversary of the disaster in 2027.
Other organisations named as being referred to the CPS include the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. RBKC could face prosecution for corporate manslaughter, section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and acting contrary to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
